Contingent News
Susquehanna Council
will send a troop to the National Scout Jamboree at Fort A P Hill Virginia
in July 2005. The troop consists of 36 Scouts and four adult leaders.
The members of the contingent represent nine troops drawn from all three
districts within the council.
Preparations for the
jamboree began with decisions about what equipment, supplies and personal
gear was needed. The troop then had to acquire the necessary material.
A variety of organizations within Susquehanna Council have been very generous
in helping to supply many of the needed items.
The Williamsport/Lycoming
Foundation provided the money used to purchase the cabin tents the participants
will stay in while at the jamboree. VFW Post 6631 in Selinsgrove has provided
money to purchase utility wagons the participants will use to carry their
equipment and supplies into and out of the jamboree. Wood Mode in Kreamer
has provided wood for the construction of the field kitchens that will
be used for meal preparation at the jamboree. The VFW Home Association
in Selinsgrove and the Moose Lodge in Middleburg have also donated money
to help defray costs.
All the troops attending
the jamboree have been assigned a unit number just for the event. All
participants in the troop will also wear a distinctive council shoulder
insignia. During a weekend camp in October at Camp Karoondinha, the Scouts
selected the design for their shoulder insignia. Six designs were submitted
and the Scouts chose a design that depicts Susquehanna Council as the
home of the Little League World Series. The design will also appear on
their Scout cap and on a hat pin.
During their weekend
camp, the Scouts stayed busy with a variety of activities. The Scouts
formed the patrols as they will exist during the jamboree and then elected
their senior patrol leader and patrol leaders. They helped build the patrol
boxes they will use at the jamboree and also spent time planning the appearance
of the gateway they will construct at the entrance to their campsite at
the jamboree. The gateway will follow the Little League World Series theme.
While the participants
are busy making their preparations, a council jamboree committee has been
at work behind the scenes making arrangements to support the troop. Getting
all the Scouts, leaders, equipment and supplies to the jamboree is no
simple matter so one of the first tasks the committee undertook was to
arrange transportation. Tour buses have been chartered to take the Scouts
and leaders to the jamboree and Milton Transport has volunteered the use
of a tractor-trailer to carry the equipment and supplies. A company driver
has volunteered to take the truck down and back.
The committee also
decided that it did not want to just take the troop directly to the jamboree
and then bring it straight back home. A tour of historical sites has been
planned for the trip down and a stop at Six Flags America will be made
on the return home. The committee now has to finalize plans for accommodations
in Virginia for the participants prior to their arrival at the jamboree.
Thanks to the work
of Scouting volunteers and help from the community, the Scouts and their
leaders can look forward to an exciting and memorable time at the National
Scout Jamboree in 2005.

been purchased for the use at the 2005 national jamboree. They are the

the summer of 2006 after the jamboree ends. The tents have already been
purchased and are presently being stored for the jamboree.
